BBC Masterchef to present the ‘Only the Best’ Awards
Wealden’s own Masterchef, Peter Bayless, the winner of BBC Masterchef of 2006, will be presenting the first awards in the district championing the whole Quality Food Experience…the ‘Only the Best’ awards.
Peter, the Chalvington advertising executive whose culinary skills rocketed him to celebrity chef status in this year’s Masterchef competition, will be presenting awards to the first 18 restaurants and food businesses to achieve ‘Only the Best’ recognition. The event takes place at the Ashdown Park Hotel, itself one of the award winners, on Monday July 10 2006.
The awards have been initiated by Wealden District Council’s Public Protection Team to encourage excellent standards for food hygiene and customer care. The awards are open to local caterers, retailers and producers. Winners must achieve very high standards of:
- Food Safety Management
- Staff Training
- Commitment to Customer Care
Wealden believe this is the first food safety award in the country that also recognises the importance of customer care.
“I am honoured to have been chosen to present the first awards in Wealden. I hope many more businesses will recognise the significance of the award and strive to achieve success in the future,” said Masterchef Peter Bayless.
“These restaurants and food businesses have shown a real commitment to quality which means much more than just compliance with the law. They really care,” said Councillor Mrs Pam Doodes, Cabinet member for Health & Public Safety.
“Award-winners are able to display the ‘Only The Best’ logo and certificate to show customers that they can expect, and will receive, the best from that business” says Councillor Pam Doodes.

Using the Wealden website, customers can check the range of features the award holders have on offer. These include use of local produce, healthier eating, vegetarian or speciality menu items, disabled access, child friendly or no smoking premises.
The Award is open to all food businesses, farm shops, market stalls, manufacturers, cafes, takeaways and hotels.
Wealden welcomes applications from every business that considers they maintain high standards of hygiene and care for their customers. Periodic checks are made on ‘Only the Best’ premises to ensure the award’s high standards are being maintained.
