Blanket failures highlight the need to be careful this winter
A total of 395 blankets were tested across Wealden district earlier this month and nearly half - 48% - failed to meet safety regulations.
“The failed blankets could have led to electrocution or house fires,” explained Councillor Mrs Pam Doodes, Cabinet Member for Health and Public Safety. “These have been destroyed with the owners’ permission, and the owners receive a voucher for a 50% discount on the purchase of a new blanket. These results underline the importance to everybody of being careful when using older appliances.”
Anyone who has an electric blanket and is concerned about its safety can contact Sophie Hepworth on 01323 443275 for advice and, if necessary, receive a 50% off voucher for a replacement blanket.
Free electric blanket testing has become a regular Wealden event in the run up to winter. This year sessions took place at ten village and town halls, and were well attended despite the poor weather. The service is accompanied by advice on energy efficiency, pensions and benefits and fire prevention. Residents are able to learn more about Anchor Staying Put, the home improvement service for older and disabled homeowners.
The service has become popular with Wealden residents. One said: “Both my blankets failed – good job I came – it’s better than having a fire! ” An elderly lady exclaimed : “I was overwhelmed at how good the service was! ”
The Electric Blanket Testing programme is coordinated by Wealden District Council in partnership with Anchor Staying Put, parish and town councils, Trading Standards, Department of Work and Pensions, East Sussex Fire and Rescue, Care for the Carers, Sussex Downs and Wealden Primary Care Trust and Wealden Benefits Department; and it is hoped to repeat it again next year.
