Everyone has a part to play in making Wealden a Greener, Cleaner, Brighter place
Wealden District Council is continuing its drive to make a Greener, Cleaner, Brighter Wealden with a number of important of initiatives.
These include expanding the kerbside plastics recycling collection, encouraging developers to install renewable energy and conservation measures, creating a design guide for new developments, increased use of renewable energy and highlighting Wealden’s many environmental strengths such as it Ancient Woodlands.
Now Council Leader Nigel Coltman, is urging residents and other organisation in the district to get behind the Greener, Cleaner, Brighter initiative. He has also appointed a sustainability champion, Councillor Mrs Rowena More to further develop conservation and sustainability issues by the Council.
“To be truly successful, this initiative must be one that chimes in with our residents,” explained Councillor Coltman. “The way we have been able to work in partnership with our residents to recycle so much of our waste makes it clear that the wider sustainability agenda will only succeed with the same degree of public understanding and cooperation. Sustainability has to be the way forward if we are to enjoy our environment, and not destroy it. By ignoring it, I do not believe we would be forgiven by the generations that follow.
"Small changes in the way we live can have a huge positive effect on our local and national environments,” said the Council’s Sustainability Champion, Councillor Moore. “Switching to low energy light bulbs, turning appliances off and heating thermostats down, being more conscious of waste when we buy things and of reusing, recycling and composting when we throw things away really does make a big difference.
“It’s heartening that people in the South East reduced their water consumption in June and July by around 5 per cent in response to the drought messages - we need to think about waste, and especially carbon emissions, with a similar heart.
The Council’s Greener Cleaner Brighter initiatives are outlined in this year’s annual review booklet being sent to every household in Wealden over the next few weeks."
"This is our way of highlighting some of initiatives we have been involved with over the past year, as well as providing residents with useful contact information so that they can make full use of the many services Wealden provides,” said Councillor Coltman.“How well we care for our Wealden environment and our communities- as the cover points out - is up to all of us.”
The Wealden review also includes a Free Child Swim Voucher, courtesy of Wealden leisure’s provider, Freedom Leisure. The review is being distributed over September in order to minimise costs. If you have not received a copy by October, please contact the council on 01892 602745.
