Still time to join in the hunt
There is still time to join in the Wealden Ancient Tree Hunt, the competition to help record some of the wonderful ancient trees that grow in Wealden.
“This autumn the changing colours of our trees has been magnificent,” said Councillor Chantal Wilson, Chairman of Wealden District Council and one of the competition judges. “They provide a great source of inspiration for everyone. What better time to start recording their natural beauty through photographs, drawings, writing or other form of creative expression.”
Wealden District Council and the Sussex Wildlife Trust is looking for artwork inspired by its ancient trees. Pictures, stories, sculptures and photographs are all eligible. There are six age categories for the Wealden Ancient Tree Hunt competition ranging from the fives to the over 65s, and prizes for the winners in each category.
To find out how to enter, look on Wealden’s web site, www.wealden.gov.uk, or ring the competition enquiry line on 01892 602451.
But hurry…The closing date for entries is Friday November 30.
There are some 500 ancient trees in Wealden, but many are unrecorded. They can be found in wooded valleys, old farmyards, parkland, churchyards and village greens. They may be over 100 years old and are usually home to an abundance of wildlife: plants, fungi, birds, reptiles and animals. They have wide trunks and show their age by hollow branches, scarred bark and dead wood.
When you enter the competition, please make a note of the location of the tree so we can arrange for it to be included in our Ancient Tree survey.
