Wealden wins building regulations court case

Wealden District Council has successfully pursued a case on Building Regulations contraventions, including safety regulations, at Lewes Magistrates Court and advised the defendant on remedial work. Mrs Madelaine Willink of Park Road, Forest Row has now undertaken the work needed for the loft conversion at a property in Priors Hatch Farm, Forest Row to achieve compliance.

Cllr Keith Whitehead, Portfolio-holder for Planning and Development, said “The safety of buildings and the way they are constructed are both very important. Wealden takes breaches of the Building Regulations seriously. We are pleased to have demonstrated this through pursuing this case and are satisfied that the breaches have been remedied.”

Mrs Willink pleaded guilty to the four breaches: installing stairs that contravened Building Regulations, failing to provide adequate guarding to first floor windows and adequate smoke alarm/detection to the building and failing to submit a suitable Building Regulation application to the Council. She was fined £600 and required to pay Council costs of £360.99 together with the £15 victim’s surcharge.

Mrs Willink apologised to the Court for contravening the Building Regulations and thanked Wealden’s Building Control Service for its help in enabling her to resolve the situation.
