Crack down on lazy litter louts
When it comes to litter louts who just can't be bothered, Wealden is bothered.
"Last year Wealden District Council spent more than £600,000 on clearing up after people who just couldn’t be bothered to take their litter home or deposit it in a litter bin," said Councillor Sylvia Tidy, Cabinet member for Community Development. "This must stop. We need to have a sensible zero tolerance policy."
"We've had enough of these people who are making our picturesque district look like an eyesore. Our Street Scene Enforcement Team will be targeting those people who refuse to act responsibly. Whether they are pedestrians or occupants of a moving vehicle, we will be taking action,"
The Enforcement Team will actively prosecute litter louts by handing out £75 Fixed Penalty Notices, which if not promptly paid, could lead to a fine of £2500.
The team will be patrolling Wealden at random in an effort to educate and apprehend litter offenders. Fixed Penalty Notices will be issued to anyone seen throwing out any item of litter in an attempt to turn the tide on this sort of environmental crime.
Wealden council tax payers are having to pay to help clear up an ever-increasing volume of litter that is being left in our countryside and towns. In some cases, such as plastics, this litter can take up to 1000 years to degrade.
Members of the public can play a part in helping fight the litter problem by using the Report It pages.
