Act now to reduce your fuel costs
With rising fuel prices dominating the headlines, Wealden District Council is urging residents to seriously consider their energy needs and ask themselves if more can be done to insulate their homes.
"Although summer may not seem the time to think about the colder months, it is the perfect time to get any work done to help make your home warmer over winter, and more energy efficient," said Councillor Dick Angel, Cabinet member for Affordable Housing.
Fuel poverty is defined as when a household needs to spend 10% or more of its income to stay warm. There are a number of grants available to people on qualifying benefits or who are over 70 to provide free loft and cavity wall insulation. Some grants provide free or discounted heating systems to those on qualifying benefits.
There are also discount schemes available to everyone for loft and cavity wall insulation.
“It is important that people get the support they are entitled to," explained Councillor Angel. "People should be warm and comfortable in their home over winter, not struggling to pay bills. Now is the ideal time to check if you can get any grants or discounts to help keep your home warm at a lower cost.”

You can reduce your energy bills by using less energy. Turning off TVs, computers and other devices, using energy saving light bulbs, hanging washing outside rather than tumble drying - these things can all make a difference.
If you are having trouble paying your fuel bills, you should start by talking to your supplier. Some energy suppliers have trust schemes to help people who are struggling with bills, ask your supplier for details.
