Award for Wealden college conversion
A Wealden conversion of a Grade II listed building triumphed in the first ever 'Sussex Built-In Quality' awards held in Brighton this month.
Weston Homes won the 'Conversion' category, open to developments in East and West Sussex and Brighton, for its conversion of Mayfield Grange into 12 luxury apartments. Mayfield Grange was formerly Mayfield College, a Grade II listed building designed by the Victorian Gothic architect Edward Pugin in 1865.
Once part of a boarding school run by monks, the Great Hall has been converted into 11 two-bedroom apartments, and the Chapel converted into a loft apartment, all in keeping with the architectural heritage of the original building. The conversion have been complimented by 11 new five-bedroom houses.
"By working with Wealden District Council's Planning and Building Control officers, the developers have been able to make the most of this village centre location, while preserving a fine historic building for future use," said Cllr Roy Galley, Cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Housing Delivery.
As category winner, Weston Homes will go forward to the Local Authority Building Control 'National Built-In Quality' awards.
Millwood Designer Homes Ltd, who have also been working closely with Wealden District Council and other Sussex Building Control Services, received a certificate for the 'Best Small Domestic Project' for Tyburn House, Ely Grange in Frant.
The Sussex awards evening highlights the benefits of close working between architects, builders, construction professionals and the local authority building control teams.
Next year the awards will cover the LABC South East Region. Those working within Wealden District who would like to know more about the 2009 LABC South East Region Excellence Awards and how to enter should email building.control@wealden.gov.uk
