Energy saving competition for young people in Wealden

Wealden District Council is launching an energy saving competition for the summer.   Three young people could win a tour for themselves and their family of the Earthship - the award-winning sustainable building in Brighton.

The competition aims to help raise awareness of the importance of saving energy to young people. To enter you need to write a 250 word article or a poem on why it is important to save energy at home.  Competitors may want to think about:

There is information on saving energy at home on the 'Warm Homes' section of the Council's website.  The Earthship Brighton has been designed to have its own natural system of heating and cooling, helped by its walls which are made of earth-filled car tyres,  recycled cans and bottles.

"How we save energy is going to be a huge subject in the future, so the ideas of the young Wealden residents are going to be particularly important," said Councillor Dick Angel, Cabinet Member for Affordable Housing. "We want to encourage them to think about how best we can meet this challenge in the home."

The winners will also have their articles published on the Wealden District Council website, the W4Y youth website, and in the Warm Homes newsletter.

The deadline for entries is the Friday 15 August 2008.  Entries can be emailed to privatehousing@wealden.gov.uk or sent by post to:  Home Energy Competition, Private Housing, Wealden District Council, Vicarage Lane, Hailsham, BN27 2AX .

Entrants must be under 18. All work submitted is non-returnable.  The tour will be provided for three families of four  (please note that transport is not included in the prize) .
