Thinking Safety – on-line help for young people

Wealden District Council and the Safer Wealden Partnership have created a new area on the Wealden Youth Website entitled: 'Thinking Safety'. This area is packed with good advice for young people about staying safe in a variety of situations.

The information on the Wealden Youth Website has been developed from material provided by the Suzy Lamplugh Trust.

"I have read the information with interest and it really makes sense", said James Davies, a Wealden Youth Cabinet Member for East Sussex and Deputy Member of the UK Youth Parliament for Wealden. "It's packed with practical stuff that anyone my age will find useful. I would recommend all young people to visit the Website and take a few moments to read it."

The information was collated, inputted and published on the website by Miles Clark Dean from Hailsham Community College as part of his work experience with the Council.

"I have read the information myself and not only is it great for young people I think many parents would find it interesting too – I certainly learned some new things," said Councillor Ron Cussons, Portfolio Holder for Community Services with Wealden District Council.

Chief Inspector Neil Honnor, Wealden's District Commander for Sussex Police said that young people can be vulnerable when it comes to crime. "Reducing the number of young people who become victims of crime is a key target for the Safer Wealden Partnership. The information on the website should help to prevent crime being committed against young people in Wealden. However I would like to remind everyone that Wealden is a very low crime area and my Officers and the Safer Wealden Partnership are working hard to keep it that way."

The Wealden Youth Website has been up and running for just over two years and has attracted over 8,000 visitors, many of whom return regularly. The site is managed by the Council with the help of a group of 15 young people spread right across the District.
