All to play for in Wealden District
Following the success of Wealden's National Play Day held at the Maurice Thornton Playing Field in Hailsham, Wealden District Council and Freedom Leisure are able to offer free play provision in any of the district's villages and towns.
Active Play, funded by the Big Lottery Scheme, offers drop in play sessions for 5-16 year olds. Sessions include a mobile skate park, art and craft making, drama workshops and many more fun activities.
"Through this scheme we are aiming to involve as many young people as possible, " said Councillor Ron Cussons, Wealden Cabinet member for Community. "We sometimes forget the important role of play in developing young people's social and physical development. Active Play brings children together is a safe but stimulating group environment. Well over 200 youngsters came along to last week's National Play Day event in Hailsham. There is no escaping how popular such an event can be."
The National Play Day event was organised by Wealden District Council, Hailsham East Children’s Centre and Wealden’s new Active Play team, with strong support from the Sussex Police and East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service.
There were plenty of free activities on offer including the new mobile skate park, a penalty shoot-out competition, face painting, arts & craft along with water games.
“I hope we can build on this success. It has been a fantastic day for all, showing how Play Days are great for communities," said Wealden’s Play Development Officer Katie McMillan. "Next year we plan to deliver more events throughout the district.”
The Active Play team is now ready to offer activities across Wealden. All that is needed is a playing field, playground or an indoor space no smaller than a badminton court. All children who attend will need to complete a simple registration form on their first visit. Under 8's must be accompanied by an appropriate adult at all Active Play sessions.
