Who is responsible for coast protection?

The Environment Agency is responsible for the provision and maintenance of the sea defences at Pevensey Bay beach and the Cuckmere Haven. The Environment Agency is also responsible for the prevention of inland flooding.

The Pevensey Bay defences have recently been strengthened and are managed by Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd.

The Environment Agency is looking at the feasibility of allowing Cuckmere Haven to return to its natural state (salt flats) by adopting a policy of retreating the line.
