Why has the CROWN scheme been developed?
The Crown scheme has been developed for the following reasons
- There is a legal obligation under the EU Landfill Directive to divert the majority of organic waste from landfill sites.
- Existing recycling initiatives would not have enabled the Council to meet the targets set in the National Waste Strategy.
- The landfill sites near Lewes and Hastings within East Sussex are almost full.
- The Waste Local Plan for East Sussex proposes a major shift away from the use of landfill sites. In the future the majority of household waste will have to be delivered to alternative disposal facilities such as central composting sites and Materials Reclamation Facilities (MRF's).
- Organic waste, including paper and cardboard, accounts for at approximately 60% of household waste in Wealden (by weight). It therefore makes sense to prioritise segregation of this waste stream.
- It aims to save both energy and raw materials through recycling and composting waste instead.
- It deals with our waste in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly manner.
- Kerbside recycling and alternate weekly collections encourage more residents to recycle.
