Drug and Substance Misuse

The Wealden, Lewes and Eastbourne Substance Misuse Action Group (WELSMAG) has been working effectively for many years, tackling drug and alcohol misuse in Wealden.

The group is part of the East Sussex Drug & Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) partnership, made up of representatives from the Primary Care Trust, Sussex Police, treatment providers, the Safer Wealden Partnership , East Sussex County Council, and Wealden District Council, as well as many others.

The group oversees the implementation of an action plan to tackle drug and alcohol misuse in Wealden.

There has been a significant increase in the number of people entering and successfully completing drug and alcohol treatment and those accessing the needle exchange . This has been as a result of significant extra investment in drug treatment services in Wealden. Opening hours for services have been extended and clients can now expect better care management and assessment.

The DAAT Co-ordinator works closely with the Safer Wealden Partnership to allocate the Building Safer Communities expenditure according to local priorities, and to monitor the effectiveness of these initiatives.
