Warning to Wealden Residents about Pedlars

Wealden Police are warning householders to be aware of a recent spate of ‘Pedlars’ operating in the area. These people are often from different parts of the country and go from door to door offering items for sale. The items are usually low-priced household items such as dusters or cleaning materials. In order to operate legally, these people should have obtained a Pedlars Certificate and householders should bear this is mind if they intend to buy anything. Never allow these people into your homes. It is always good practice never to buy from unsolicited doorstep sellers.

All authorised pedlars operating within the Wealden area must have obtained an A2 form (Pedlar Application) from their local police station, providing proof of a current address and residency in Sussex for the last month. There is a £12.50 fee which needs to be paid in full at the police station at the time of registration. The Pedlar Check List is then completed and sent to off for approval by a senior police officer. Once approval has been granted then a Pedlars Certificate is issued to the applicant. Should the application be rejected by the senior officer then they will be informed by letter and their money refunded by cheque.

Quote from DI Colin DOWLE, “Door to door sellers can be a legitimate form of selling but, which must be supported by a valid Pedlars Certificate. However, householders should be cautious. Residents are advised to check identification prior to any purchase of goods and if in doubt please contact Sussex Police”.
