Road Safety

Do you know that Wealden has one of the highest rates for people who are killed or seriously injured on the roads in the region?

15 deaths were reported on Wealden’s roads in 2009 - don’t become a victim in 2010.

The majority of Wealden’s roads are small and rural; there may be a national limit sign, but that doesn’t mean that 60mph is acceptable. To keep safe you need to think of your speed, the road conditions and what may be around the next corner…

The Road Safety Action Group was formed during 2007 to assist in reducing road traffic collisions.  The group has been meeting quarterly and has introduced initiatives such as roadside education where anti-social and dangerous driving habits such as excessive speed, non-wearing of seatbelts and use of mobile phones are tackled.

Through the Neighbourhood Policing Teams the Group has also helped to set up the Community Speed Watch scheme.   This is formed from local people and supported by the Police, monitoring speed within their neighbourhoods.  Anyone found to be speeding is sent a written warning letter.  Persistent offenders are  targeted and could end up in Court for prosecution.

Operation Crackdown has also been launched to target persistent bad drivers, before they cause an accident. Their anti-social driving may include tailgating, using a mobile phone whilst driving, drink driving, under-age driving and reckless driving.

Help yourself to stay safe - report anti-social driving through the Operation Crackdown website (external link).

If anyone is interested in setting up a Speed Watch scheme in their neighbourhood they should contact their Neighbourhood Policing Team. Just use the Sussex Police District Map (external link) to select Wealden, then click on the area you live in.
