Supporting Victims of Crime
People react to crime in many ways. Although most do not suffer long-term harm, both adults and children can be seriously affected. Specialists are available to help and guide you.
The Crown Court Witness Service offers emotional support to victims, witnesses and their families throughout their trial. Call 01323 728201 for details. This service is also available in Magistrates' Courts and can be accessed by calling 01323 642758.
Domestic Violence
Domestic Violence is the most under-reported crime with an estimated 25% of incidents being reported to police. On average, a woman will fall victim to a violent partner 35 times before she calls for help.
Such crimes are taken seriously by The Safer Wealden Partnership with police officers and other agency staff actively engaged in dealing with such issues.
Specialist police staff receive training to deal with domestic violence victims. The Adult Protection Team has four dedicated liaison officers who help and advise victims whether by phone or at a weekly drop-in session. The help line numbers are:
- The Adult Protection Team 01323 414147
- The National Domestic Violence helpline 0808 2000 247
- Refuge East Sussex Outreach Team 01323 511100
- CRI Wealden

Racist Incidents
If you have been a victim or witness to a racially aggravated crime, then you will know how frightening it can be. But help is on hand in the guise of the county's dedicated Racist Incident Caseworker. Complaints are treated in confidence and information is only shared with identified organisations with the victim's consent. Call Sompriti Racist Incident Caseworker 01273 477550 for details.
If you are intimidated or threatened with violence within your home, The Adult Protection Team may be able to assist by providing a Lifeline unit. Please contact 01323 414147 for further information.
Victim Support
Each year, Victim Support offers help to over one million people affected by crime. It is an independent national charity where trained volunteers offer free and confidential support. Call 01323 728201 for details.
