Cracking Down on Vehicle Crime
If your vehicle is stolen, broken into or damaged, it could mean weeks of expensive inconvenience - and losing your no claims bonus. Such crimes are usually opportunist and you can stop the crooks with vigilance and relatively cheap security precautions.
Don't be wise after the event, follow the tips below:
Never leave a car unlocked or a window or sunroof open.
Take belongings with you when leaving your vehicle. A thief will not know a coat or bag doesn't contain valuables.
Security mark your stereo and if it is removable, always take it with you. Make a note of the serial number and keep it in a safe place.
Put your aerial down to stop it being vandalised.
Use your garage when you're not using your vehicle.
Fit a car alarm or engine Immobiliser. When leaving your car at night, try to park under a street light.
Bicycles
Use a strong lock when leaving your bike unattended - even for a few minutes - and secure it to an immovable object. Seats and wheels are targets for thieves. If you have quick release, remove the seat and secure the wheels to the frame. Take a photograph of your bike, as it will help the police identify it. Have your bike post-coded. (Details available from your local Sussex Police Crime Prevention Co-ordinator on 0845 6070999).
Motorcycles
Invest in a secure locking device (shackle lock or strong chain and padlock) for the wheel of the motorbike.
Fit an alarm (available from DIY or bike shops).
Park in a well-lit parking place with an immovable object for securing your motorbike - or lock it to another bike.
Invest in a cover for the motorbike, as it reduces temptation.
Secure your motorbike to a locking post at home. Better still, lock it away in a secure garage or shed.
Have your motorbike post-coded. Details available from your local Sussex Police Crime Prevention Officer on 0845 6070999 .
Abandoned Vehicles
Abandoned vehicles are a danger to the public and often end up being set alight.
You can report abandoned vehicles to Wealden District Council by phoning 01892 602730, who will endeavour to arrange their removal OR on-line to the Sussex Police web site where you will be able to enter the details of the vehicle and its location on a Public Reporting Form. The form should only take a few minutes to complete - and the more information you can provide, the quicker we can begin proceedings to remove the vehicle.
