Private Housing Assistance
The Council has a key role in helping elderly, disabled and vulnerable residents to adapt, improve and maintain their homes.
Within Wealden there are three types of assistance that are available:
Mandatory Disabled Facilities Grants
Disabled Facilities Grant are available for the adaptation of properties to enable a disabled person to continue to live there. Adaptations may include improving access to the property, the WC and bathing facilities and providing in certain circumstances additional accommodation for sleeping and bathing. These grants are subject to a financial assessment except for children's applications.
Decent Home Assistance/Decent Home Loans
Decent Home Assistance and Decent Home Loans are available to bring properties up to the decent home standard. Applications will be considered for the following works:
- To remedy any Category 1 hazard under the Housing Health and Safety Rating system;
- To bring the property up to a reasonable state of repair;
- To provide reasonably modern facilities and services;
- To provide a reasonable degree of thermal comfort.

Home Repair Assistance
Home Repair Assistance is a discretionary form of assistance which is available for various repairs and improvements for owner-occupiers and tenants (for works which are not the responsibility of the landlord). The Assistance is available to help low income households with small scale works to resolve issues affecting the health and safety of the occupants.
Applications will be considered for the following works:
- To remove category 1 hazards as determined by the Housing, Health and Safety Rating System
- Eliminate or reduce significant category 2 hazards to an acceptable standard
- To bring the dwelling up to the Decent Home standard or move it towards decency
- Provision of Wealden Lifeline equipment
- Top-up of a Warmfront grant
