Key Workers
In the past the Council have carried out research into the housing needs of key workers in the District. The research suggests that some employers have difficulty in filling certain posts due to the high cost of housing.
Am I a Key Worker?
NHS |
All clinical staff employed by the NHS except doctors and dentists. |
Education |
Qualified teachers in LEA schools/sixth form colleges, lecturers in FE colleges, children’s social workers and qualified nursery nurses in LEA nursery schools |
Police |
Police officers and community support officers (including British Transport Police or the Civil Nuclear Constabulary in certain areas). Some front line civilian police roles are also eligible |
Prison Service |
Prison officers and related grades, operational support grades, nursing staff, industrials and instructional officers working at specified locations including Lewes. |
Probation Service |
Probation officers/senior officers/service officers and other operational staff. |
Local Authority |
Local authority employed clinical staff, adult social workers, occupational therapists, educational psychologists, speech and language therapists, and rehabilitation officers for the visually impaired and qualified nursery nurses. Local authority planners delivering statutory planning services. Connexions Personal Advisors. |
Fire Fighters |
Uniformed fire and rescue staff below principal level |
Ministry of Defence Posts |
Regular Service Personnel (Military Provost Guard Service in Navy, Army, Air Force), clinical staff (not doctors/dentist) MoD Police Officers, Uniformed staff in the Defence against Fire Service |

- Discounted rent – this is where 80% of the ordinary open market value for a similar size property in the area is charged. Town and Country Housing Group have properties available in Uckfield and Crowborough, which are targeted at key workers. - Homebuy – Traditionally this has been called “shared ownership” which is where you purchase a share of a property with a mortgage and pay a rental charge on the unsold share.
