Legally naming streets in Wealden
Streets without a name
The Council is carrying out an ongoing initiative to legally name all the streets in the district. At the beginning there were over 300 streets without a legal street name. Some streets are referred to locally by more than one name and others do not have an associated street name at all.
The Town and Parish Councils were consulted requesting their suggestions and comments on the streets which needed to be legally named.
Street naming legal order notices are displayed on the site which advertise the proposed street name. Accompanying maps showing the extent of each street are made available for inspection at the Council Offices' receptions at Hailsham and Crowborough.
What happens if no one appeals?
Notices are removed from site after being displayed for one calendar month. An uncontested Order will then be sealed. Street nameplates will be erected on site in the future. The Council informs Land Registry, Emergency Services, Ordnance Survey, Utilities etc of the newly named street.
I would like to appeal against the proposed street name
If you disagree with the proposed street name you need to put your appeal in writing to the local magistrates court:
Eastbourne Magistrates Court
Old Orchard Road
Eastbourne
BN21 4UN
Lewes Magistrates Court
Friars Walk
Lewes
BN7 2PG
What happens next?
If an appeal is lodged against the proposed street name, further consultation is carried out with the residents regarding the choice of street name. If appeals continue then the case will be taken to the Magistrates Court for a decision to be made.
