Wealden District Council

Hackney Carriage Meters

Meters

Sealed calendar meters are required to be fitted to all hackney carriage vehicles.

Since 1 April 2013 it has been a condition of your licence that you have a sealed calibrated meter fitted. However, we recognise that you need sufficient notification and opportunity to make arrangements for its fitment in advance of licensing and therefore the condition will be implemented as follows:

Since1 July 2013, when you present your vehicle for the renewal of your existing hackney carriage vehicle licence or for the grant of a new licence, your hackney carriage will need to have the appropriate meter fitted.

A calibration certificate will also be required at the time of licensing/ re-licensing certifying that the meter has been calibrated at a rate that does not exceed the Council's maximum fare rate.

Meters can be obtained from:

We have adopted a maximum fare rate with effect from 1 April 2013.

Bearing in mind the implementation period, outlined above, this means that from 1 July 2013, when you present your vehicle for the renewal of your existing hackney carriage vehicle licence or for the grant of a new licence, your hackney carriage will not only be fitted with the appropriate meter but it will be calibrated at a rate that does not exceed the Council's maximum fare rate.

Tariff cards will be displayed in a prominent position within the vehicle

It will be acceptable for meters to be calibrated at a lower rate than that shown on the Council's tariff however any cumulative rate charged must not exceed the Council's maximum.

Where lower rates are set then an additional tariff card showing those rates must also be displayed in a prominent position within the vehicle. The fare card is shown below:
