An opportunity has arisen to join us in our busy Benefits Service as a Benefits Officer. You will be assessing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction Claims including updating our computer systems. You will also provide general benefit advice and support to customers making a claim for housing benefit and/or council tax reduction as well as dealing directly with customers, their representatives, landlord or other third parties in respect of the customer's claim for benefit or reduction. Other duties will include receiving, verifying and scanning customers’ documentation and maintaining records.

You should have some experience of working in an office environment as well as experience of dealing with customers and members of the public. GCSE Maths and English Grade C or equivalent are essential as well as good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. This role involves regular telephone contact with the public, requiring fluent spoken English.

To be successful you will have a working knowledge of assessing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction schemes, ideally using an Academy system, together with an understanding of Data Protection and Freedom of Information issues. However we would consider appointing at an introductory level for the right candidate who does not have benefits experience, the salary range would be £8,680 to £9,644 (part time) or £17,844 to £19,824 (full time). Following training the successful applicant would be able to progress to the higher levels.

There is no pre-set work pattern for the part time vacancy and this is to be agreed at offer stage.

Progression through the salary bars is dependent on Benefits Officers carrying out the main activities of the higher level on a regular basis and processing Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefits across all tenure types to a satisfactory performance level.
