Person required for the Council’s Independent Remuneration Panel to Review the Council’s Members’ Allowance Scheme

Wealden District Council are looking for an individual who is passionate about the local area, to join the Independent Remuneration Panel (IRP) to help review our Members Allowances Scheme.

The Council is required to have a Members’ Allowances Scheme, whereby Councillors are entitled to fair allowances and expenses to cover the basic costs of carrying out their duties e.g. for attending and travelling to meetings, or visiting their constituents.  This helps ensure that people from all walks of life have the opportunity to act as local representatives. 

Allowances recognise that people are offering their time to act as elected representatives of local people to provide some financial recompense.

To ensure that the Scheme is appropriate, the IRP will undertake a yearly review to ensure that allowances and expenses are ‘fit for purpose’ and that they reflect current trends. They will meet twice a year at the Council Offices in Hailsham.

If you wish to apply to join the IRP, you should be interested in the local area, be 18 or older, and may have particular skills such as an awareness of Local Government, financial expertise, commercial skills and community relations expertise.

You should also have the ability to assess the relative value of different roles undertaken by Councillors and the ability to understand a range of information, willingness to ask questions, make recommendations and present findings.

Members of the IRP will receive an allowance of £280 p.a.

You should be available for an interview on Wednesday 4 September 2019, if selected.

Please note you are not eligible for appointment if:

  • You do not live or work with the Wealden District
  • You are a Councillor or Officer of any local authority
  • You have a close personal relationship with a Councillor or Officer of the Council or any Town or Parish Council within the Wealden District
  • You work for any organisation which receives grants from the Council
