Wealden District Council

Get composting

Media Release : 09 May 2017

This week is International Compost Awareness week (7 – 13 May). Wealden District Council is encouraging more residents to get composting with some fantastic offers promoted in partnership with East Sussex County Council.

Discounted home composters are offered to anyone living in Wealden, starting from as little as £17.98 for a 220 litre bin. There is also a fantastic Buy one get one half price offer, offering residents the chance to buy a second compost bin for only £8.99! To take advantage of this offer, visit www.escc.getcomposting.com (external link) or order direct from our partner recycling container specialists Straight Plc on 0844 571 4444.
“It makes so much more sense to compost your own waste whenever you can, and put it back on the garden to provide it with more nutrients for seasons to come,” said Councillor Roy Galley, Wealden Cabinet member with responsibility for waste management. “So rather than buy in nutrients for your garden, use a composter to make your own.”
More than 30 % of the average household waste can be composted and although many households already compost at home, even more households can get involved. Compostable items include eggshells, egg boxes, hair, coffee granules, tea bags, rotten fruit, vegetable scraps, grass cuttings, shredded paper and lots more.
Home composting organic waste also helps to significantly reduce carbon emissions and can be used as an effective and sustainable waste management method with the added benefit of producing rich soil conditioner for your garden.
When garden waste is collected by the Council’s waste contractor, it is taken to Veolia’s In-Vessel Composting Facility at Whitesmith to be turned into soil conditioner. This ensures the composting takes place in an enclosed environment, with accurate temperature control and monitoring.
In 2015/16 Wealden collected over 13,500 tonnes of garden waste. This was turned into a high quality soil enhancer which can be purchased from Household Waste Recycling Sites across East Sussex.
