Growing old actively in Wealden

Media Release : 22 August 2017

Memory Moments cafes are being held across Wealden as part of the seasonal celebration of older people across the country this September and October.

Older Peoples Day 2017

Older People’s Day takes place on 1 October and for the past 10 years, organisations across East Sussex have arranged a series of events to celebrate and support the role of older people.

The Wealden Dementia Action Alliance was launched just over a year ago to help and encourage dementia awareness groups across the District. Following a short break while road improvements were carried out in Hailsham, Movies Make Memories is back with two screenings: the Fred Astaire and Ginger Roger classic Top Hat on 22 September and Doris Day in Calamity Jane on 20 October.  A new Dementia Café has been launched at Polegate Community Centre on first Thursday of the month, starting September from 2pm to 4pm.

There are also events taking place in Buxted, Crowborough, Uckfield and Hailsham supporting people with dementia and their helpers.

“As well as weekly Memory Moments Cafes run by Know Dementia, there are now regular themed events based on music and sport for people with dementia,” said Councillor Claire Dowling, Wealden Cabinet member for Public Health and Community Safety. “There is a welcome return for Movies Make Memories and a new Dementia Café in Polegate as well as Cakes, Coffee and Computers, a talk about  Herstmonceux in the second world war,  help with going online, indoor games sessions and a chance to enjoy some old time music. It is going to be a busy two months."

A full list of Older People’s Day events both in Wealden and across East Sussex can be found on the East Sussex County Council website (external link).

The music themed events are held every Tuesday by Know Dementia at Uckfield Civic Hall and offer everyone, whatever their ability, the opportunity to join in a choir led by classically-trained singer Mae Heydorn - no experience necessary. Sporting Moments Events held every Wednesday at Uckfield Leisure Centre provide a chance for some enjoyable exercise. Classes can be taken seated or standing.

The next in Wealden District Council’s popular series of Cakes, Coffee and Computers, which provides simple one-to-one help for the inexperienced in using the internet and getting online, will be held at East Dean Village Hall on 22 September.
