Wednesday 30 January waste and recycling collections

News : 30 January 2019

Snow followed by a hard frost has led to difficult conditions on untreated roads and may result in some disruption to today’s waste and recycling collections.

Icy road frosty morning

Wealden District Council apologise for any inconvenience that may result from the disruption to waste collections today. Roads are particularly affected in the north of the District from Heathfield to Crowborough and beyond.  While some locations may be passable with care in smaller vehicles, waste vehicles do not perform well in icy conditions. They have rear wheel drive with automatic gearboxes and weigh up to 26 tonnes. If they lose traction there can be a significant risk to life and property.  Each driver assesses the local conditions on arrival and if they feel it is unsafe will not proceed.

As a result of these conditions, collections scheduled for today may be missed or made at a different time to normal.  Our waste contractor will record areas not collected today and arrange a return collection at the earliest opportunity.  However, should your bin not have been emptied by 5pm today please register the missed collection online  using My Wealden through our website at https://my.wealden.gov.uk/  or call our Contact Centre on 01323 443322 by 5pm on Thursday 31st January.

In addition, due to the freezing temperatures garden waste collection crews are reporting the contents being frozen to the inside of some bins and when they are tipped upside down the contents do not come out in part or full despite being tipped several times.  On these occasions we regret we will be unable to arrange a return collection and ask that the bin be re-presented for the next scheduled collection day with the contents loose inside.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
