We want everyone in Wealden to enjoy the attractive natural environment, and have access to housing and local employment opportunities through:

  • Planned growth that respects our environment

  • Sensitive improvements to essential infrastructure

  • Protection for our outstanding landscape and our heritage

  • Maintaining a great place to live, work and play

We would like to see a high quality natural and built environment for everyone living in, working in or visiting Wealden.

We aim to:

  • Ensure development growth is in line with the adopted Local Plan which will deliver sustainable developments in Wealden's towns and villages

  • Preserve the character of Wealden's rural areas and support the work of the South Downs National Park
  • Carefully manage our sensitive, protected landscapes including Wealden's designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Support, conserve and enhance Wealden's green spaces and biodiversity assets including designated sites such as the Pevensey Levels

We will:

  • Encourage take up of green energy options

  • Enable the building of 1,800 homes over the next four years as contained in the Local Plan

  • Review housing need to help plan new affordable housing

  • Promote Wealden as a tourist destination by celebrating its attractive environment

  • Maintain the standard and cleanliness of the local street scene

  • Increase the proportion of household waste which is recycled

  • Work to reduce the total amount of household waste

  • Consider development of a renewable energy centre

  • Review nitrogen deposition in protecting the fragile environment of the Ashdown Forest

  • Provide Suitable Alternative Natural Green Spaces and manage them like country parks

  • Work with partners to secure infrastructure at the right time to support sustainable development and realise local benefits from developer contributions e.g.

    • Town centre revitalisation for Uckfield and Hailsham

    • A22/A27 improvements benefiting the south of the District

    • A21 improvements benefiting the north of the District
    • Junction improvements for Polegate
    • Hailsham - Polegate - Eastbourne Sustainable Transport Corridor including express bus service
    • A22/Hempstead Lane and other junction improvements in Hailsham
    • Increased primary and secondary school capacity
  • Support partners in promoting better rail services:
    • One hour fast rail service from Polegate to London
    • Improving the Hastings line
    • Direct services to Cannon Street
  • Support the reinstatement of the Lewes - Uckfield line
