Local Economy

We want Wealden communities, residents and businesses to prosper and flourish in the District. We are committed to promoting and planning opportunities for growth through:

  • Vibrant high streets and villages
  • Business innovation in a green environment
  • Fast broadband for Wealden enterprise
  • Wealden growing as a tourist destination
  • Working with the South East Local Enterprise Partnership
  • Working  with local businesses through the Chambers of Commerce and the Federation of Small Businesses
  • Encouraging funding into the District
  • Improved mobile phone coverage

We would like to see prosperous Wealden communities, residents and businesses served by an innovative District Council.

We aim to:

  • Attract more jobs and employment opportunities to the District
  • See more young people taking up local jobs
  • Improve local employment chances by promoting access to training courses that meet employers' needs
  • Promote busier, more vibrant high streets and village centres through our 'Streets Ahead' initiative
  • Support improvements to shopping facilities where appropriate
  • Ensure fast digital access to markets for Wealden businesses
  • Work with local businesses to grow Wealden's tourism offer to make the District increasingly a destination of choice and encourage higher visitor spending
  • Support Wealden's farming, forestry and viticulture enterprises
  • Encourage entrepreneurs, start-ups and niche businesses
  • Enhance opportunities for hi-tech businesses
  • Encourage more local procurement by the public sector
  • Encourage more local people to buy local produce
  • Promote development that creates jobs, enabling more people to work close to where they live
  • Take opportunities to increase external grant funding into the District to benefit community groups and social enterprise from sources such as SELEP, the National Lottery, Sussex Community Foundation, local trusts and Leader funding
  • Play our part in Team East Sussex to make the most of economic growth opportunities for the County
  • Assist economic growth through an Infrastructure Delivery Plan

 We will:

  • Maintain free car parking at point of use
  • Explore the potential for a large scale tourism development in the south of the District
  • Recognise the importance of the economic benefits of Gatwick Airport to the District but also work to ensure any changes do not increase environmental harm, including noise, on our local communities
  • Support improvements to the A27 and A21
  • Support reinstatement of a strategic transport link between Uckfield and Lewes
  • Promote the A22 Enterprise Corridor
  • Enable the provision of additional appropriately sited employment and retail space
  • Make the planning process for business as simple as possible
  • Lobby for better mobile phone coverage
