Review of Polling Districts and Polling Places

The Council reviewed polling districts and polling places within Wealden during 2016/17.  This review was as a result of the final proposals published by the Local Government Boundary Commission for England (LGBCE) on 27 September 2016 for warding arrangements and county electoral divisions within Wealden.

What is a polling district?

A polling district is a geographical sub-division of an electoral area. An electoral area may be a UK Parliamentary constituency (eg Wealden), a District ward (eg Uckfield Central), a County electoral division (eg Uckfield) or a parish or parish ward (eg Buxted Parish, Buxted Ward).

What is a polling place?

A polling place is a geographical area in which a polling station is located. However, there is no legal definition of what a polling place is, the geographical area could be defined as tightly as a particular building or as widely as the entire polling district. Any elector within the Wealden, Rother (part), Eastbourne (part) and Lewes (part) Constituencies may make representations on existing and proposed polling districts and places. Representations on these or any other related matter are welcomed from persons or groups with interest or expertise in the access to premises or facilities for persons who have different forms of disability. Any person or body making a representation should where appropriate give alternative places that may be used as polling places.

What is a polling station?

A polling station is the room or area within the polling place where voting takes place. Unlike polling districts and polling places which are fixed by the Local Authority, polling stations are chosen by the relevant Returning Officer for the election.

2014 Polling District and Polling Place Review

Under the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013, all district councils are required to undertake a review of polling districts, polling places and access arrangements.  The compulsory review periods are; the period of 16 months beginning with 1st October 2013 and the period of 16 months beginning with 1st October of every fifth year after that.

Local Authorities are required to divide their area into polling districts for the purposes of Parliamentary elections and to designate polling places for these polling districts and keep these under review

Following the consultation period a report was presented to Overview & Scrutiny Committee on 24 November 2014.  It was resolved that each polling district and the polling districts bordering it be designated as the polling place for that polling district.

In line with his delegated powers the Returning Officer will publish a list of buildings to be used as polling stations on an annual basis.
