Litter

Definition

Litter includes items such as crisp packets, cigarettes, bags, drinks cans etc that have been dropped in a public place. It does not include items such as apples, leaves, twigs or any other bio-degradable matter.

Areas we are responsible for

The Council is responsible to keep highways, lay-bys, bus shelters, subways, council car and coach parks and recycling centres clean.

Areas we do not cover

The Council is not responsible for removing litter from the following locations:

  • Motorways
  • Trunk roads
  • Private Land - this is the land owners responsibility

Reporting a problem

If you feel that there is an area that comes under our jurisdiction that requires litter picking, please use our report a problem with litter form or contact us using the details below.

What happens next

Once a litter problem is reported, it is followed up with an inspection after which all relevant and necessary work is carried out.
