The Data Protection Act 1998 establishes a framework of rights and duties which are designed to safeguard personal data. It ensures organisations manage the information they hold in a proper way. It also gives you rights to view the information held about you and to correct any information that is wrong.
The Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000 and Environmental Information Regulations (EIR) 2005 deal with official information held by public authorities in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. These regulations give people the right to request information held by public authorities. This 'right to know' allows you to access a range of recorded information held by the Council, such as emails, minutes of meetings, research or reports and is intended to promote a culture of openness and accountability.
