2016 saw the third year of our walking festival, a joint venture with Eastbourne Borough Council and Wealden District Council. The festival encouraged residents and visitors to take up walking as a way of staying healthy while at the same time enjoying the stunning beauty of this part of Sussex.
The festival attracted approximately 1000 walkers over the nine day period. The walks ranged from hikes, strolls and short walks including nature-themed walks, Winnie the Pooh walks, trips back in history with local experts, exploring wildlife, a Waldron literary walk, foraging walks and walks which celebrated the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. There were also numerous opportunities to try out Nordic walking - fitness walking with specially designed poles.
We carried out a short survey after the event and found that 38% of the participants live within Wealden and 38% live in the Eastbourne area. The walks were rated very positively with 96% saying they were either excellent or good. 82% of participants were aged 55 or over and 60% were female. 96% of participants asked for information on future walks events and 60% said they will now do more walking having participated in the festival and none said they will do less, which is very encouraging.
Wealden District Council, with the help of each of the 42 parishes in the area and supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, has established the Wealden Walks. Using over 150 miles of the existing public rights of way network, some of which was previously underused, we have provided a means of viewing and understanding Wealden's natural and historic landscapes. The walks have also been arranged to incorporate links with the public transport network, both bus and rail.
Guided walks are run throughout the year and are a great way to learn about the local area whilst enjoying a walk.
