Fun and Safety Returns in February

Fun and Safety, the popular Active Wealden half term play day, returns to Hailsham on Thursday 16 February.

Children's storyteller at last year's event

The event, which last year attracted 250 people, will again be held at The Children's Centre in Vega Close, Hailsham and run from 10.30am to 1pm.

Half term's Fun and Safety attractions in Hailsham will include a children's entertainer, a football penalty shoot out, police van, dance mats,  arts and crafts, face painting and refreshments. But the event is not just about fun, there are opportunities to get  children thinking about some serious issues that we face from day-to-day.

These include personal safety, preventing accidents at home, fire prevention, food hygiene and community safety. Fun and Safety is free and open to all ages but children aged 8 years or below must be accompanied by an adult. The refreshments will be provided by Waitrose.

Fun and Safety is one of a number of  events for young people organised by Wealden's Community Development Team. Its work to encourage healthy activities during the summer holidays last year has earned them an Inspire Mark from LOCOG, the organisers of the 2012 London Olympics. This is  official recognition of how young people are being inspired to enjoy games and take up new activities.

"Fun and Safety is tremendous fun, but there is also the opportunity for children to learn about keeping safe both when inside and out," said Councillor Johanna Howell, Cabinet member for Community and the Voluntary Sector.  "We are very grateful to all our partner organisations who take time out of their busy schedules to work with the District's youngsters and make days like this such a success. They are part of the inspiration.

"I am very pleased that the organisers of the London 2012 Olympics have recognised the inspirational value of the work Active Wealden and our Community Development team has been doing.  This is a wonderful achievement for Wealden. We hope to encourage even more local families to get active this summer and try new sports and activities - and that they will continue to participate well after 2012."

Project partners for Fun and Safety include: Wealden District Council, Wealden Children's Centre, East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, NHS Sussex, Active Play and Sussex Police.
