Free electric blanket testing

Media Release : 06 October 2011

With a cold chill in the air, free electric blanket testing returns to Wealden, visiting six different venues during the week commencing 10 October.

Last year's sessions found 38% of blankets tested failed to meet safety standards, so it is important that they are regularly tested.

Wealden's Electric Blanket Testing Sessions also provide an opportunity to get friendly advice and information on home safety, house adaptations, pensions and benefits, home security and fire prevention.

"Over the past ten years, there have been 27 serious house fires as a result of faulty electric blankets in East Sussex,"  said Councillor Johanna Howell, Cabinet Member for Community at Wealden District Council. "Electric blankets provide a valuable means of keeping warm during autumn and winter, but it is important that they are regularly tested, particularly if the blankets are showing signs of wear or the material is fraying. If you have any concerns, I would urge you to go along to one of the sessions in your area."

"These events offer so much more than just blanket testing. They provide a welcome opportunity for residents receive advice about a wide range of public safety and welfare issues."
