Wealden District Council

Radiation

Some local authorities, along with the Health Authority and Water Companies, carry out monthly and continuous monthly monitoring of background radiation in the district.

Our program started after the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in 1986.

Our monitoring shows that background radiation levels from natural sources are normal but vary throughout the year, due to rainfall.

However, we continue to monitor so that in the event of another accident in this Country or abroad, we will know if the level of radiation has risen above the normal range. This is part of the Council's emergency plan for response to nuclear accidents.
