Building New Homes

Changes in housing legislation have given Wealden District Council the opportunity to build new Council homes in the district.

Evelyn Clark New HousesThe changes, outlined in the Localism Act 2011 and self-financing proposals, allow the Council to keep its rental income from Council Housing and invest it in new homes for local people.

The Council completed 64 new homes to rent in 2014 in Willingdon, Crowborough and Forest Row.

The Council is now preparing for Phase 2 of our New Council Homes Programme that consists of:


  • London Road Hailsham elevations (pdf)
    The Council is working in partnership with McCarthy & Stone to provide 20 one & two bedroom apartments to rent for older people. The building is likely to be completed in September 2017.
  • Leap Cross Business Park, Hailsham Plans (pdf)
    Leap Cross site has planning approval and our contractor Trinity Homes started on site in May 2016. The site will provide 12 affordable homes (houses and apartments) to rent. We anticipate the scheme will complete in May 2017.
  • Grants Hill House Plans (pdf)
    Grants Hill House, the Council is proposing to demolish this building and replace with 67 Retirement Living apartments for rent. The site has planning approval.
  • Elizabeth Court, St Mary's Avenue, Hailsham Plans (pdf)
    Elizabeth Court, the Council is proposing to demolish this building and replace with 5 x 2 bedroom houses and 12 x 1 bedroom apartments to rent. A planning application for the scheme was submitted 3 June 2016.
  • Brook St, Polegate Plans (pdf) 
    11 - 13 Brook Street is currently an empty plot; the Council is proposing to build 6 x 1 bedroom apartments.
  • Snape View, Wadhurst Plans (pdf)
    This Snape View site accommodated garages which have since been demolished. The Council proposes to redevelop the site to provide 3 one bedroom apartments.
  • Courthope Avenue Plans (pdf)
    The Courthorpe site is undeveloped and the Council proposes to build 2 two bedroom chalet bungalows for older people.

The Wadhurst proposals will be subject to a public consultation on Wednesday 08 June from 1400 to 1900 at Fazan Court, Wadhurst.
