Sanctuary Scheme

The Sanctuary Scheme provides an alternative to relocation away from family and friends, vital support networks and key services. It seeks to prevent homelessness through the installation of enhanced security measures in a victim's property.

What is domestic abuse?

Most people think of domestic violence as someone being physically violent to a partner or relation. However, Domestic Violence can take many forms:

  • Verbal abuse
  • Emotional abuse
  • Threats and intimidation
  • Sexual abuse
  • Isolation
  • Financial abuse
  • Physical abuse 

Although most people suffering domestic abuse are women, a small percentage of victims are men.

What help is available?

  • Help is available for people suffering from domestic abuse:
  • Counselling & support
  • Practical assistance
  • Temporary housing through a Refuge either in Wealden or outside the District
  • Permanent re-housing

Wealden runs a Domestic Abuse forum to co-ordinate the agencies working in the District and to ensure we have enough access to refuge spaces. This forum forms part of the Crime and Disorder reduction Partnership (external link).
