Wealden District Council

Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA)

The Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) is an essential piece of evidence which is required to support the Local Plan process. It is a technical assessment which considers the availability, suitability and achievability of land in the District for possible development. The assessment does not in itself determine whether a site should be allocated for development but is used to aid the Local Plan making process. The SHELAA is not a statement of Council planning policy.

The Strategic Housing and Economic Land Availability Assessment (SHELAA) Report is currently being finalised. It will be published as soon as it is finalised. Please note that sites submitted after 12th May 2017 will not be included within this report, but will be saved and considered for inclusion in the report to be published in 2018. The council is unable to provide any information about specific sites that have been submitted to the SHELAA prior to the publication of the final report

SHELAA Interim Publication - Local Plan Sub-Committee 8th June 2016

The following maps have been produced from information currently held by the Planning Policy Team at Wealden District Council.

These parcels of land have not yet been assessed and are not a policy statement for future growth. The maps are a record of those sites that have been submitted by interested parties for potential development and have not necessarily been verified. The submission may not be for housing development. The publication of these sites does not mean that they are suitable for development. Further work is being undertaken on the SHELAA and it is expected prior to the publication of the finished document some sites will be withdrawn and further sites will be added to this evidence base.

No conclusions on future policies should be drawn from these maps.

Call for Sites

The Council is currently undertaking work on its SHELAA in accordance with the SHELAA Methodology (pdf).  When published, the SHELAA will provide an assessment of site suitability for development as an evidence base for the and the Hailsham Area Action Plan as well as the Five Year Housing Land Supply.

If you are considering submitting a new site, please complete the SHELAA New Site Form (pdf) and as soon as possible return it to shelaa@wealden.gov.uk or using the contact details at the bottom of the page. If you wish to provide additional information for a site you have previously submitted, please contact the Planning Policy team.

Previous SHLAA Work

SHLAA for the Delivery and Site Allocations Local Plan.

The Council undertook a Call for Sites during the summer of 2014 to update evidence on land availability in Heathfield and the settlements identified in Policy WCS6 of the Core Strategy Local Plan. The Council has since decided to combine work on the Delivery and Site Allocations Local Plan with the review of the Core Strategy, and therefore submitted sites have been automatically carried forward to the SHELAA. Further information on the assessment can be found in its bespoke methodology (pdf).
