Leisure Centre Performance

This page provides some information on the performance of Wealden's leisure centres at Crowborough, Hailsham, Heathfield and Uckfield. The centres are run by the Council's Leisure provider Freedom Leisure (external link).

Leisure centre use

Leisure centre attendance increased by 7% between 2006/07 and 2010/11.

Over the last three years, the split between dryside activity, such as gym use, and wetside activity, mainly swimming, is around two thirds to one third, as shown in the graph and table below.

Active and fit young people

The Council's Active Leisure and Wellbeing Strategy has highlighted a worrying percentage of the district's children and young people as overweight or obese (16% of year six children).

Our leisure centres provide a membership scheme to encourage active young people aged between 14 and 18, referred to as the 1418 scheme.  The list below shows membership for this scheme over the last few years:

• 2008/09 membership: 453
• 2009/10 membership: 392
• 2010/11 membership: 398

Active and fit older people

The district has an ageing population therefore it is important to keep people active for as long as possible so they can live independently at home and enjoy their environment for longer. The Council therefore also seeks to promote fit and active lifestyles for older people and the centres operate a 60+ membership scheme. The 60+ scheme has seen some growth over the last three years, as shown in the list below:

• 2009/10 membership: 431
• 2010/11 membership: 435

Measuring the success of GP referrals

The centres also operate a GP referral scheme enabling local people to become fitter. This has also enjoyed some success in increasing the proportion of people completing the 10 week courses who continue to use the fitness facilities afterwards.
