Welcome to Your Council

The Council has 55 District Councillors serving a population of approximately 148,000. The Cabinet, comprising the Leader of the Council and six portfolio-holders, is responsible for the Council's budget and policies. The Council's Corporate Plan sets out our overall direction and priorities, supported by a range of other strategies and plans.  Our success in carrying out these plans is monitored through performance management.


Democracy - Councillors

The Council has 55 District Councillors elected in 35 Wards.

The Conservative Group currently has overall control of the Council. The political composition of the Council is as follows:

  • Conservatives: 47
  • Independent Democrats: 4
  • Liberal Democrats: 3
  • Independent: 1

Democracy - Council Meetings

District Councillors make policies and take decisions that affect the people of Wealden and decide how the budget should be spent. Detailed decisions are delegated to the Cabinet, individual Cabinet members and Committees.

How the Council works and our partnerships with other organisations are set out in these pages. Wealden District Council's Corporate Plan sets out our vision, objectives and priorities. Other plans and strategies contribute to delivering this Corporate Plan, and ensure good practice in the way we provide Council services.

Voting and Elections

Wealden has 35 Parish Councils, four Town Councils and three Parish Meetings. The District is divided into four Parliamentary constituencies and is part of the South East Region for the European Parliament.

Elections to the whole Council are held every four years with the next election taking place on 7 May 2015.
