Walking in the Wealden countryside
Looking to get out and about in the countryside this summer? A free walking pack and guide book has just been published to help you explore one of Wealden’s largest parishes, Rotherfield, on foot.
The walking packs are hot off the press and contain five easy-to-follow walks, ranging from three to eight miles, set in the heart of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Each leaflet gives details of refreshment stops and places to visit en-route as well as public transport information.
The Rotherfield Guide Book offers information on the local wildlife and the history and heritage of the area. In the back of the guide book is a laminated insert which shows the Rotherfield’s extensive network of over 40 miles of rights of way network …just the thing for those who wish to head off and explore other routes.
The walking pack and guide book have been produced by the Rotherfield Community Tourism Initiative whose hard work and commitment has drawn in more than £600,000 in funding to greatly improve the rights of way network. The bridleways were in a particularly bad state of repair, with ruts up to six feet deep in places. These ancient rights of way have now been preserved for future generations to enjoy.
“Public footpath and rights of way offer a great way to get off the beaten track and enjoy the tranquillity of the Wealden countryside,” said Councillor Keith Whitehead, Cabinet portfolio holder for Sustainable Development & Regeneration at Wealden District Council, one of the partners in the RCTI.
“And by spending time in our villages and making use of their facilities, visitors are helping to sustain the rural economy.”
“Although we may only be a small village in terms of population, we are excited about the opportunity we have to make the most of some of our best natural assets,” said John Dolwin, chairman of the Rotherfield Community Tourism Initiative. “Our rights of way network includes 11 miles of bridle paths so whether you are on foot, bike or horseback you can make the most of your visit to Rotherfield.”
