The death of Councillor John Vincent
It is with a tremendous sadness that Wealden District Council has to announce the sudden death of its chairman, Councillor John Vincent.
Councillor Vincent, ward member for Pevensey and Westham, died of a heart attack on Monday night after serving the Council for many years.
“John has been a very active member of the Council since he joined in 1987, using his energy for the benefit of the local community,“ said Council Nigel Coltman, Leader of Wealden District Council.
“When he was elected chairman last month, he said it had always been his ambition to one day to become chairman. It is a great shame that his term has been cut so short. At next week’s Council meeting, a proper tribute will be paid to mark his contribution to the community. Our thoughts go out to all his family and friends at this difficult time”
Councillor Vincent was elected to Wealden District Council in 1987 and became one of the driving forces in improving the district’s leisure facilities, chairing the Council’s Leisure, Tourism and Arts committee for a number of years.
As well as actively representing the interests of the people of Westham and Pevensey on the district council, he regularly attended parish council meetings and was today described as a source of great inspiration for their work. He died shortly after speaking at a meeting of Westham Parish Council last night.
In May, Councillor Vincent was elected to East Sussex County Council and was looking forward to furthering the local cause on a wider stage. He has also begun harnessing his energies towards raising money for his designated charity, the Sussex Air Ambulance Appeal.
