Rotten bargains this September

Wealden District Council, in partnership with East Sussex County Council, is offering a £10 reduction during September on all food digesters and wormeries in a bid to boost recycling this autumn.

Digesters are a more versatile form of composter, capable of breaking down cooked meat and fish as well as green and garden waste. They not only reduce nasty niffs coming for the wheelie bin but can provide a natural source of nutrition for the garden.

Wealden’s September discounts mean a Green Cone food digester now costs £14.95, a larger Green Johanna food digester costs £31.

The £10 September discount also applies to wormeries, bringing the price down to £25. Wormeries take up very little space, and are a fun way of turning organic waste into liquid plant food.

Every year, UK households throw away the equivalent of 3.5 million double-decker buses worth of rubbish. Put these in a traffic jam and they would stretch two and a half times around the Earth.

“Disposing of rubbish costs money and it is also taking a toll on the environment and yet one third of the waste we produce could be composted at home, providing a useful garden nutrient,” said Councillor Pam Doodes, Cabinet Portfolio holder for Health and Public Safety. “Now, more than ever before, it is a good time to think about composting your household and garden waste.”

Compost bins, which can only handle vegetable matter and garden waste, are available to Wealden residents for as little as £12, and come with a free 60 day home trial.
