We’ll Keep Talking In An Emergency
Eastbourne and Wealden Councils are supporting the local RAYNET group. RAYNET is a national organisation of Licensed Radio Operators who give their services voluntarily to assist the local community. They also provide a valuable source of communication to the local authority in times of emergency.
Eastbourne Borough Council Cabinet Spokesperson for Strategy, Democracy, Human Resources and Equalities Councillor Barbara Goodall says, “I am pleased that the two Councils can give some help to the local volunteer RAYNET organisation. This will improve its ability to provide communications support which can be deployed in all situations including emergencies. RAYNET has a proven record in assisting public bodies in their role in dealing with emergencies and this continuing partnership can only be of benefit to the public in our area.”
“We never know if and when we may face an emergency, but we do know communication will play an important part in our response. We are very pleased to support RAYNET and be working alongside them in our preparations,” said Councillor Raymond Parsons, the Cabinet Portfolio Holder responsible for Emergency Planning at Wealden District Council.
Dick Jeffries, RAYNET Group Controller says, “The new RAYNET Communications Unit will enable professional quality communications to be provided to support Eastbourne Borough Council and Wealden District Council at any local emergency.”
The new trailer is a self contained unit that can be sent to any location within a short space of time. Once on site, the unit can be up and running without the need of connecting to mains electricity. RAYNET also has the ability to deploy radio operators with equipment at various locations during an incident or event to provide a comprehensive communications service.
The local RAYNET group has used its spare time to convert the 10ft by 6ft trailer into a mobile communications base. The local volunteers have raised most of the money needed for the £9,000 project.
