How Does The Crown Scheme Work?
(Composting and Recycling our Waste Now)
There are currently two variations of the Crown scheme in operation within the main Towns in Wealden.
- The Crown Scheme - operating in the Hailsham, Herstmonceux, Windmill Hill, Hellingly, Heathfield and Crowborough area.
- The Crown Scheme including a plastic bottle collection - operating in the Willingdon, East Dean, Polegate, Westham, Stone Cross, Pevensey, Pevensey Bay and Uckfield area.
The Crown Scheme
This system is the scheme that was first introduced in to the district and currently covers over 20,000 households. Each household should have
- a blue box
- a 240 litre bin for green waste
- a 240 litre bin for landfill waste
The blue box is for recycling
The bin for green waste is for composting
The Landfill bin is for
The collection is an alternate weekly collection which means one week the landfill bin will be collected and the following week the bin for green waste and the blue box will be collected. The bin for green waste is collected by the same crew that collects the landfill bin. The blue box is then collected by a separate split compartment vehicle, allowing the paper to be separated from the cans, foil and aerosols when it is collected from the kerbside.
To ensure residents receive their collection they must
- put the correct container/s at the boundary of the property (unless an exemption has been granted) ready for collection from 7am onwards.
- ensure all landfill waste is contained within the bin. Any additional waste will not be collected and needs to be taken to one of the Household Waste Recycling Sites.
Residents will receive a collection calendar every year which shows in detail the collection pattern and what can be placed in each container. A newsletter called "Waste Matters" is also sent out with the calendars providing residents with further information and updates on the scheme.
The Crown Scheme including a plastic bottle collection
The white bag was added on to the 3 bin system in February 2004, enabling Wealden to trial a kerbside collection of plastic bottles at 1,000 properties in Willingdon. The scheme has since been expanded to include just over 17,000 properties and we hope to be able to expand this to the remaining properties on Crown. Each household should have
- a blue box
- a 55 or 95 litre white bag
- a 240 litre bin for green waste
- a 240 litre bin for landfill waste
