Public perception of crime & safety survey results

Introduction

The Wealden Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnership (now known as The Safer Wealden Partnership) commissioned a survey of residents during September 2004 on the subject of crime and disorder. Its aim was to provide a baseline of data to help ensure that the opinions and experiences of local residents are fully taken into account within the Community Safety Strategy for 2005-2008.

The survey was conducted by in home interviews of a quota sample of 545 people across Wealden which was as representative as possible according to the age and gender profile of the district. An example of the questionnaire used can be found in Appendix 4.2 of the Perception of Crime and Safety Report 2004.

The four most common problems experienced were:

Priorities for the future

  1. Greater sentences for individuals convicted
  2. More diversionary activities for young people to do
  3. Improve systems to discourage anti-social behaviour
  4. Better information on enforcement action taken e.g. anti-social behaviour
  5. Keep the area nice and clean as this makes people feel safer.
