Renewable energy (sometimes called microgeneration) is a relatively new way of providing electricity that has become more popular over the last few years. A range of devices can allow people to make their own electricity from the wind, sun or even the ground or water from a stream or river.

Before considering renewable energy, your home should be as energy efficient as possible. This is a requirement for most of the renewable energy grants.
