Council Tax FAQs – Direct Debits

You can make regular payments by signing up to pay automatically by direct debit. This is the simplest way to pay and the one we recommend.

You have a money back guarantee from your bank in the event of an error, advance notice if the date or amount changes and the right to cancel at any time. You only need to sign one form and your bank does the rest. You won’t need to renew your direct debit when you receive a new council tax bill.

This section gives you more information about how to pay by direct debit.

Why pay by direct debit?

It is quick and easy to set up.

It is convenient. There is no need to worry about posting cheques to us on time. Or queuing up at pay-points and leaving your home during bad weather to get a payment to us.

It will make sure that your instalments get paid on time.

You can choose one of three dates in the month to make your payment (1st, 15th or 25th of each month)

You can spread your payments over 12 months (April to March) instead of 10 (April to January).

When you set up a direct debit we won’t take any money from your bank account until we have given you at least 10 days notice. We will tell you the amount that we will take and the date it will be taken. This will give you enough time to contact us if you have a query.

If we, or your bank, make an error, you are guaranteed a full and immediate refund from your bank.

You can cancel your direct debit instruction at any time by contacting us or your bank

How do I set up a direct debit?

Over 66% of our council tax payers currently settle their bills by direct debit, which is a convenient and inexpensive method.

You can set up a direct debit with us by:

  • Setting up a direct debit online
  • Downloading a direct debit form, printing it off and sending it to us.
  • Over the phone or by email: You will need to give us your council tax reference number found on the top right of your bill. And you will need to know your bank sorting code and account number.
