We receive a high number of complaints about smoke, most of which are due to bonfires. Smoke complaints may occur on residential or commercial premises including construction sites burning trade waste .
Other sources of smoke which occasionally cause complaints include wood burners. These must be installed according to Building Regulations and used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
We cannot investigate smoke from steam trains.
It is an offence to emit dark smoke from the chimney of any building, except for permitted periods of time (when the furnace or boiler etc is warming up).
We do not recommend that residents have bonfires.
With exemptions, all waste generated on a construction site must be taken away by a licensed waste carrier and disposed of (treated) at a licensed waste treatment site.
